Our Story

In the rich tapestry of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.'s history, the Mu Iota Chapter holds a distinguished place, emblematic of the fraternity's enduring legacy of leadership, community service, and brotherhood. Chartered on June 1, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio, Mu Iota was conceived as a beacon for graduate brothers seeking to perpetuate the lofty ideals and traditions established by the fraternity's undergraduate chapter at Ohio State University, Iota Psi Chapter, since its inception in 1926.

The initiative to form Mu Iota Chapter was spearheaded by four visionary brothers from the Beta chapter at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. These men—John White, Allen Wright, George Carter, and Brother Peters—recognized the need for a forum where Omega Men in the Columbus area could congregate for fellowship, intellectual exchange, and collective action. Their pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for what would become a vital organ in the body of Omega Psi Phi and the wider Columbus community.

In the nascent stages of Mu Iota's history, the chapter's call to uphold and advance the Omega tradition resonated deeply within the Columbus area, attracting at least 30 men to join the founders in their noble quest. This rapid growth and vibrant activity underscored the chapter's significance and its members' commitment to the fraternity's cardinal principles: manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift.

The success and impact of Mu Iota Chapter were so profound that, by 1948, it earned the honor of hosting the 34th National Conclave in Columbus. This prestigious event not only highlighted Mu Iota's achievements and contributions to the fraternity but also solidified its status as a key influencer within the national Omega community and beyond.

Over the decades, Mu Iota Chapter has not only sustained but also amplified its influential presence across various spheres of the Columbus community. Members of Mu Iota have been notably active and impactful within the public school system, local politics, and religious and civic associations. Through their dedicated service, leadership, and advocacy, the brothers of Mu Iota have made indelible marks on the social, educational, and cultural landscapes of Columbus.

The legacy of Mu Iota Chapter is a testament to the power of vision, unity, and relentless pursuit of excellence. It stands as a proud chapter in the storied history of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., embodying the fraternity's commitment to fostering a sense of brotherhood, service, and upliftment among its members and within the communities they serve. As Mu Iota continues to build on its rich heritage, it remains a beacon of Omega's enduring ideals, inspiring current and future generations to carry forward the torch of leadership, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift.
